Start with your experience.
Paid work is one source of evidence. Relevant examples may also come from community leadership, organizing, caregiving, education, volunteering or mutual aid. Name the context accurately and give shared work fair credit.
Use the prompts in writing, aloud or with someone you trust. Skip any prompt that is not useful. You decide what personal circumstances or identities to disclose.
1. Define your direction
Which role or type of work are you pursuing? What problems would that employer need you to solve?
Write one direction for this version; you can create another version for a different goal.
2. Select three strengths
Choose three relevant strengths. Pair each with a real example that demonstrates it.
Avoid a list of adjectives without evidence.
3. Write your introduction
Describe your professional focus, the work you have done, and what you want to contribute next.
Try: My background is in… I have focused on… I am looking to bring that experience to…
4. Check consistency
Compare job titles, employers, dates and claims across your résumé, LinkedIn and interview notes. What needs correction or clarification?
Use accurate dates and titles, and choose how much context you want to share about your career path. You do not need to include private details about health, caregiving or other personal circumstances.
5. Check the application instructions
Review the requested file type and required information. Make sure headings are clear and the document’s text can be selected and read in order.
Before sending: proofread contact details, links, names and dates. No résumé format can guarantee an ATS result.
